Debuting on November 10th, 2022, on Netflix, the series quickly became one of the platform’s standout documentaries of the year, gaining significant popularity despite its late release. According to FlixPatrol rankings, it secured the sixth spot with 2,339 points.
The inaugural eight-episode season delved into theories about an advanced Ice Age civilization that met its end in a catastrophic event. The series traversed the globe, exploring ancient sites in countries such as the United States, Turkey, Indonesia, Malta, Mexico, and more.
In response to criticism from the Society for American Archaeology, which urged Bela Bajaria and Rachel Corp to reclassify the documentary series as fiction, Hancock addressed the backlash in an interview, stating, ‘Archaeologists and their allies in the media are furious about my Ancient Apocalypse series on Netflix and are calling for my cancellation…’
The show entered the global top 10 rankings, accumulating 24.62 million hours watched from November 13th to November 20th.
Throughout 2023, the series maintained its popularity. Based on two Netflix Engagement Reports, it garnered 51.4 million viewing hours worldwide, translating to 12.1 million views. Ben Kelly serves as the commissioner for the Netflix series, which is produced by ITN Productions.
Various online sources have confirmed that production has begun on the new season of the documentary series, with some crew members involved as early as March 2023.
