‘Maharaj’ Drawing from a true historic court case, a courageous journalist challenges a respected leader’s unethical actions.
The debut film in Netflix’s collaboration with Yash Raj Films faces a release delay due to a court order.
Introduction
Yash Raj Film studio, a famous Indian film studio, made its first foray into streaming in September 2023 with Netflix as its partner. The results of their partnership seem promising given that, in Netflix’s most recent engagement report (2023), one of YRF’s series called They Are the Railway Men appeared among the top performing non-English projects towards the end of the year.
Currently, Yash Raj Films is preparing to launch their first Netflix partnership film “Maharaj,” a historical drama. Taking after “The Railway Men,” “Maharaj” mixes true happenings and a made-up plot that is inspired by Saurabh Shukla’s docu-novel with the very same title. This film featuring Siddharth P Malhotra who directed “Hichki” which was an emotional drama released in 2018, signifies that a powerful story shall be shared with us.
Story-line of ‘Maharaj’ on Netflix
India in 1862, the Maharaj that appears on Netflix is not your run-of-the-mill courtroom drama. What sets it apart is that it delves into societal and political unrest. The story revolves around a highly prejudiced slander case where truth is sought with relentless zeal.

The story is about Karsandas Mulji, a young, idealistic journalist in Mumbai (formerly Bombay) who advocates for women’s rights and critiques other social injustices particularly through his writing; one day one such critique involves Jadunathji Maharaj – the Vaishnavite Hindu sect’s charismatic leader of great influence.
The courtroom turns into a competition between ideologies. Defending press freedom, Karsandas says one needs to point out things that go wrong even if they involve those with high positions. At the same time, Maharaj’s lawyers claim that Karsandas is a troublemaker who is destroying societies. Thus, this case is viewed as some sorts of show trial that has attracted huge public attention leading to debates about religious and social transformation.
“Maharaj” is more coming from merely a movie about a trial but rather tells us something about India during her complex social and cultural reality in the 1800s as well as showing how old customs conflict with contemporary ways of life resulting in calls for gender parity. Furthermore this film revolves around the need for seeking justice through legal means in order to ensure that all people are treated fairly before the eyes of justice.
The series bravely confronts the obstacles confronting a free press and the courage required to challenge authority with truth. The result of the Maharaj libel case creates a basis for future legal disputes and sparks social movements for reform throughout India.
When Released ‘Maharaj’ on Netflix
Maharaj was set for his international debut on 14th June, 2024; however, last month, a Hindu rights group requested for a preview to ascertain that it did not offend faith sentiments. The preview, to date, has not been availed by Netflix neither has the company responded to the request sparking off fears in Vishnu Hindu Parishad about launching legal action against any cinema airing such a film.
On the 13th of June, an order was issued by the Gujarat High Court to stop Netflix from releasing Maharaj on the 14th. Netflix is said to want to challenge the order, but no compromise will be reached until June 18 when the expulsion date is renewed.
Maharaj will soon be available worldwide by June 18 unless there are further court decisions. ‘Maharaj’ This is only one of several movies produced in India planned for Netflix in 2024 going forward. Netflix Hand over greater variety of upcoming TV series or films by India on Netflix platform.
