The documentary examines the legal case involving Anna Stubblefield, an ethics professor at Rutgers University-Newark. Initially convicted in 2015, Stubblefield faced allegations of sexually abusing Derrick Johnson, a nonverbal man with cerebral palsy. Their acquaintance began in 2009 when Stubblefield, then 41, was approached by Derrick’s brother, John Johnson, a student of hers. Stubblefield offered assistance to Derrick, then 30, helping him improve his communication skills using a keyboard with an LED screen. Under her guidance, Derrick even enrolled in a university class.

While they were together, they assented to be partners romantically according to Stubblefield. Daisy Johnson, however, contests this by saying that her son lacked an ability to have sensual or emotional connection and claims that Stubblefield might have used Derrick’s hands to enable communication through typing.
